Looking Back:
What happened? Describe the results of your experiment.
For this experiment we got 50 mL of water in a flask and two grams of sodium polyacrylate. We slowly added water to the sodium polyacrylate and stirred the two together. As we stirred the water with the sodium polyacrylate we saw the it reacting to the water and it started turning into a gel like substance.
How did your experiment turn out?
As we stirred the water and sodium polyacrylate together it looked like the sodium polyacrylate was absorbing the water making it expand.
Did it work?
Yes, our two grams of sodium polyacrylate absorbed up to 500 mL of water before it turned from a gel like substance into more of a liquid.
Looking Beyond:
What do you think has happened?
I think the sodium polyacrylate absorbed the water and grew it's size untill it couldn't bond with the water any more and turned into more of a liquid.
What’s the science?
When adding water to the sodium polyacrylate the sodium polyacrylate absorbed the water making it grow untill it couldn't absorb any more.
What questions came up during the experimentation?
I was wondering how the sodium polyacrylate was absorbing the water.
Did you do any further investigation into the science behind things?
No I did not.
Looking inward:
Did you get desirable results?
Yes we did. After the inital experiment we added Gatoraide to the sodium polyacrylate but it didn't work well because of the salt in the Gatoraide
How do you think you performed in this activity?
I think I did pretty well. I took notes. Did the experiment. Payed attention. Learned how to make baby diapers. Didn't kill any of my partners. I would have to say it was a good activity.
Looking outward:
Who did you work with?
Kim Ngo, Ashleigh Olds and Lauren Taylor.
How do you think your group performed?
I think we performed well. We all got to help with the experiment and we all learned somthing.
What did you contribute to the group?
I stirred, got materials, and helped clean up.
Looking Forward: What next?
If you could do this again, what would you change to get better results?
I would use diffrent liquids with the sodium polyacrylate to see how they would react with it.
If you were organizing a group for the next lab activity, who would you choose to work with again?
I would work with the same group because we work well as a team.
Do you see any way to continue this experiment? Would you want to?
Yes, we could use different substances other than water and Gatorade.
Take aways:
What skills, techniques, or pieces or wisdom did you get from this activity?
I learned about covalent bonds and ionic bond and how they are diffrent. I also learned that carbon is a polar substance like water so we don't dissolve in water.
